Natural Remedies To Help Soothe A Sore Throat
With cold and flu season approaching, sore throats are a common complaint and concern for many. That scratchy sensation, that pain when swallowing, that hoarseness in the voice… we’ve all experienced it and it can be one of the most pesky symptoms of a cold, or a symptom of another potentially more serious infection.
If your sore throat is severe, is accompanied by a high fever, or persists for more than a couple days, be sure to get checked by your doctor.
In the mean time, the tips below can help naturally and safely soothe your throat while also boosting your body’s ability to recover.
Raw Honey – Raw or unpasteurized honey contains antimicrobial properties that can effectively soothe a sore throat and shorten the duration of your illness. Not only does it inhibit bacteria and viruses, it can also coat the throat to reduce pain and coughing. Add a spoon full of raw honey to herbal tea, hot water with lemon, or just take it alone – this is one remedy that’s delicious to take!
Licorice Root – Making a cup of tea with this herb can help loosen mucus associated with a cold and can also instantly help soothe irritation and inflammation. It also has anti-bacterial properties that can help you get over an infection faster. Drink 1-2 cups of licorice root tea per day for a couple of days.
Zinc – Zinc is an important mineral for a healthy immune system, and can help shorten the duration of a cold. Sucking on a zinc lozenge both provides your immune system with what it needs to fight an infection, and soothes your throat so you can start feeling better faster.
Hot Water – It’s important for your body to stay hydrated while fighting an infection, as well as to help reduce dryness in your throat. Proper hydration will help flush out bacteria and viruses but often when we’ve come down with a cold, cold water doesn’t do the trick. Hot water, either plain or with a squeeze of lemon juice or honey, can both hydrate and soothe.
Apple Cider Vinegar – raw apple cider vinegar’s powerful anti-microbial properties plus probiotic content make it perfect for boosting the immune system and recovering from a cold. Probiotic foods are an important for ensuring balanced microflora in the body, which is key for a strong immune system. Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a mug of hot water with raw honey, or just shoot back a spoon full in a bit of water for effective relief!
Sleep – sometimes the things that the body needs most are also the most simple. Your body restores and repairs itself during sleep, and if you’re not getting enough good quality sleep, your body is going to struggle to get well. Have a hot drink like
the ones listed above to soothe your throat then crawl into bed early to allow your body to rest and recover. Aim for 9 or even 10 hours when you are sick. It will help shorten the duration of your illness while taking your mind of a sore throat or other symptoms.
The most important thing to keep in mind when sick and experiencing symptoms like a sore throat is that your body needs some extra love and nourishment to recover! Treat your body well – it’s trying it’s very hardest to keep you alive and feeling good!
